Sleeping Woman depicts Marie-Thérèse Walter in a state of deep sleep, her face relaxed and peaceful. The painting is one of the most intimate of the Marie-Thérèse series — the sleeping figure unaware of being observed, the artist's gaze tender and protective. The warm palette and rounded forms create a sense of warmth and security.
Painted in 1935, Sleeping Woman belongs to the period of Picasso's most intense involvement with Marie-Thérèse Walter. The theme of the sleeping woman — unconscious, vulnerable, observed — runs throughout the Marie-Thérèse series and can be read as a meditation on the relationship between artist and model, between the conscious and unconscious mind.
