About This Work
This family portrait depicts Françoise Gilot with their two children Claude and Paloma. Françoise is rendered in Picasso's bold late style, her face fragmented and reassembled in the Cubist manner, while the children are depicted with a tender simplicity. The work is one of the few family portraits in Picasso's late career and reflects the domestic happiness of his years with Françoise.
Françoise Gilot was Picasso's companion from 1943 to 1953 and the mother of his children Claude and Paloma. She was the only one of his major companions to leave him, rather than being left. Her memoir 'Life with Picasso' (1964) remains one of the most important accounts of his life and personality.
