About This Work
Jacqueline with Flowers is one of the first portraits of Jacqueline Roque, who would become Picasso's last great love and his second wife. The painting depicts Jacqueline in profile, her distinctive features — the long neck, the almond-shaped eyes, the dark hair — already fully realized. A bouquet of flowers adds a note of warmth and celebration to the composition.
Picasso met Jacqueline Roque at the Madoura pottery in Vallauris in 1952. She became his companion in 1954 and his wife in 1961. Picasso made more than 400 portraits of Jacqueline — more than any other subject in his career. This early portrait captures the beginning of their relationship.
