This large canvas depicts a standing nude figure whose body is rendered in the angular, faceted style that Picasso was developing in the months before Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. The figure's body is broken into sharp, geometric planes, and the background is treated with the same angular hatching as the figure, creating a unified surface of fragmented forms. The work is one of the most radical paintings of the Proto-Cubist period.
Nude with Drapery was painted in the summer of 1907, in the immediate aftermath of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. It represents Picasso's continued exploration of the visual language he had developed in that work, pushing the fragmentation of the figure even further. The Hermitage acquired this work from the Russian collector Sergei Shchukin.
