This 1954 portrait of Jacqueline Roque, later Picasso’s second wife, places her seated with a bouquet of flowers. Her dark eyes and strong profile are delineated with the bold, expressive line associated with Picasso’s late style, while the bouquet introduces a counterpoint of decorative rhythm to the concentrated figure. At 100 × 81 cm, the canvas reads as an early entry in a long sequence of portraits of Jacqueline, inviting attention to brushwork, planar simplification, and the balance between sitter, object, and pictorial space.

Picasso met Jacqueline Roque at the Madoura pottery in Vallauris in 1952. She became his constant companion and eventually his wife, and he painted her more than any other subject in his career — over 400 portraits.
