About This Work

This large welded iron sculpture was created in collaboration with the Spanish sculptor Julio González, who taught Picasso the techniques of metal welding. The figure is rendered in an open, linear style — essentially a drawing in three dimensions — with flat iron plates and rods suggesting a female figure surrounded by foliage. The work is both airy and monumental, its open structure allowing light and space to pass through it.

Woman in the Garden represents a crucial moment in the history of sculpture, when Picasso and González together developed the technique of welded metal construction that would become one of the dominant modes of 20th-century sculpture. The work directly influenced David Smith, Anthony Caro, and generations of subsequent sculptors.
