The interlocking shapes make the subject feel both inhabited and architecturally constructed, while the scale allows the viewer to follow the scene as a shifting network rather than a single, stable view.
Guggenheim’s direct exhibition record dates the work to January 1926 at Rue La Boétie, Paris, and gives the medium and dimensions as oil on canvas, 172 × 256 cm. It records the work at the Musée national d’art moderne / Centre Pompidou as a 1947 gift of the artist.
