Le Matador presents the bullfighter as a late-career emblem of performance, risk, and Spanish cultural memory. The large canvas gives the figure a commanding frontal presence, while the title directs attention to the role rather than a named sitter. Picasso’s bullfighting subjects often compress spectacle into a few forceful signs, allowing the matador to stand for both artistic bravura and mortality. The painting’s late date makes the motif feel retrospective as well as immediate, returning to a subject that had carried symbolic force across his career.
The Centre d’Étude Picasso records Le Matador as painted in Mougins on 4 October 1970, oil on canvas, inventory MP223, and part of the 1979 Dation Pablo Picasso. The explicit date and museum documentation make it an unusually secure late work. Bullfighting had remained a persistent subject for Picasso, but here the matador can be understood as a final-period reprise of themes of spectacle, challenge, and the artist’s own Spanish inheritance.
