About This Work

Painted two years before his death, Man and Woman is one of the most powerful works from Picasso's final period. Two monumental figures face each other in a composition that recalls his earliest Blue Period works while employing the raw, gestural brushwork of his late style. The work was included in the landmark 90th birthday exhibition in Avignon.

Exhibited at the Palais des Papes in Avignon in 1973 — the year of Picasso's death — as part of the retrospective that introduced his final decade to the world. Critics who had dismissed the late work as the ramblings of an old man were forced to reconsider: the paintings were raw, urgent, and utterly original.
