About This Work

A transitional work between Analytic and Synthetic Cubism, this landscape incorporates fragments of text and poster lettering into the fragmented cityscape. The inclusion of legible text — a hallmark of Synthetic Cubism — appears here alongside the monochromatic, interlocking planes of Analytic Cubism. The work demonstrates Picasso's restless formal experimentation at the height of his Cubist period.

Painted in Céret in the Pyrenees, where Picasso and Braque spent several summers working in close collaboration. The introduction of text into the picture plane — seen here in the poster fragments — was a key step toward the papier collé technique that Braque would develop in September 1912.
