One of the most powerful works from Picasso's final years, Seated Old Man depicts a monumental, heavily built figure in a chair — widely interpreted as a self-portrait of the aging artist. The bold, almost crude brushwork and the figure's imposing presence reflect the raw energy of Picasso's late style. The work was included in the landmark 1970 Avignon exhibition.
Picasso's final years at Notre-Dame-de-Vie in Mougins were extraordinarily productive. He painted hundreds of canvases in the early 1970s, working with an urgency that seemed to intensify as he aged. The 1970 Avignon exhibition, which he organized himself at the age of 88, introduced this late work to the world.
