About This Work

This monumental late canvas shows a nude figure seated in a rocking chair, with the body fragmented and reassembled through bold, angular planes. The 195 × 130 cm scale gives the figure an assertive physical presence, while the vigorous brushwork keeps the composition active across the surface. The rocking chair, an ordinary domestic object, anchors the figure in everyday life even as the structural treatment moves toward abstraction. The work invites attention to the balance Picasso sustains between recognizable subject, shifting planes, and the material energy of paint.

Painted at La Californie, Picasso’s villa in Cannes, this work belongs to a productive late-period phase associated with his life with Jacqueline. Its imposing scale and direct execution show his continued interest in reworking the nude through increasingly economical, forceful means. Rather than presenting the body as a stable form, the painting lets figure, chair, and surrounding space press against one another, extending concerns with construction and multiple viewpoints into the artist’s later practice. The National Gallery of Australia preserves the work as part of its public collection.
