About This Work

A landmark example of Synthetic Cubist collage, this work incorporates fragments of actual newspaper, pasted paper, and charcoal drawing to depict a café table still life. The inclusion of real newspaper text introduces a new relationship between art and reality. Picasso and Braque developed this papier collé technique in 1912–1913, fundamentally changing the nature of pictorial representation.

The papier collé technique was invented by Braque in September 1912 and immediately adopted by Picasso. By incorporating real-world materials — newspapers, wallpaper, labels — into the picture plane, they challenged the fundamental distinction between representation and reality that had governed Western painting since the Renaissance.
