A tender portrait of Benedetta Canals, wife of Picasso's friend Ricard Canals, painted during the transition from the Blue to Rose Period. The warm ochre and pink tones signal the emotional thaw that marked this new phase. The sitter's gaze is direct and self-possessed, rendered with the psychological sensitivity that distinguished Picasso's portraiture.
Painted in Paris during Picasso's first sustained period of happiness after the Blue Period, this work reflects the influence of his circle of Catalan artist friends. Ricard Canals had introduced Picasso to the world of Parisian café society and the circus performers who would populate the Rose Period canvases.
