QAGOMA records La Belle Hollandaise as a 1905 mixed-media portrait made during Picasso’s brief stay in Schoorl, Holland. The unknown sitter appears nude except for a floddermuts, or lace cap, and the work’s gouache, oil, and chalk passages on card retain the immediacy of a swiftly observed encounter rather than the finish of a conventional academic nude.
The QAGOMA record situates the painting at the transition from the subdued Blue Period toward brighter Rose Period work. It notes that Picasso travelled through northern Dutch towns in 1905 and that an inscription suggests the picture was a gift to his friend and neighbour, the ceramicist Paco Durio. QAGOMA acquired it in 1959 with funds donated by Major Harold de Vahl Rubin.
