A seated woman — Marie-Thérèse Walter — is depicted with her characteristic voluptuous, biomorphic forms. The wristwatch on her arm is one of the few specific details in the composition, anchoring the dreamlike figure to the real world. The work belongs to the extraordinary series of 1932 paintings that represent the peak of Picasso's Surrealist period.
Painted in the same year as Le Rêve and Nude, Green Leaves and Bust, this work is part of the series of large-scale paintings of Marie-Thérèse Walter that Picasso created in 1932. The series was exhibited at the Galeries Georges Petit in Paris in June 1932 to enormous critical acclaim.
