A large Surrealist canvas depicting a woman seated in a garden, her form fragmented and distorted in the angular style of Picasso's late-1930s work. The figure — almost certainly Dora Maar — is surrounded by lush, stylized foliage that contrasts with the violence of her fractured form. The work was painted in the same year as the Weeping Woman and shares its psychological intensity.
Painted at the height of the Spanish Civil War, when Picasso was deeply engaged with political events in his homeland. The garden setting — traditionally a place of peace and beauty — is undermined by the distorted, anxious figure at its center, reflecting the tension between the beauty of the natural world and the horror of contemporary events.
