A commanding late-1930s portrait of Dora Maar, the Surrealist photographer who was Picasso's companion during the years of Guernica and the Spanish Civil War. The figure is depicted with angular, fractured planes that convey both her intellectual intensity and emotional vulnerability. The sharp, geometric treatment contrasts with the rounded, sensual forms Picasso used for Marie-Thérèse.
Dora Maar (1907–1997) was a Surrealist photographer and artist who met Picasso in 1936. She was his companion during the creation of Guernica — she photographed the painting's progress in the studio — and remained with him until 1944. Her portraits are among the most psychologically intense in Picasso's oeuvre.
