About This Work

The Vollard Suite is a series of 100 etchings that Picasso made between 1930 and 1937, commissioned by the dealer Ambroise Vollard. This plate — Sculptor and Model — is one of the most celebrated in the series, depicting a sculptor contemplating his creation while a model reclines nearby. The classical setting and the idealized figures recall ancient Greece, while the psychological complexity of the scene is entirely modern.

The Vollard Suite was commissioned by Ambroise Vollard in 1930 and completed in 1937. The 100 plates are divided into thematic groups: the sculptor's studio, the Minotaur, the blind Minotaur, Rembrandt, and Vollard himself. The suite is considered one of the greatest achievements in the history of printmaking.
