About This Work

This etching from the Vollard Suite depicts a sculptor's studio — a bearded artist (Picasso's self-portrait) contemplates a classical bust while a beautiful model reclines nearby. The line work is of extraordinary delicacy, the figures rendered with the same classical grace as ancient Greek vase painting. The studio setting — with its sculptures, draperies, and models — creates an idealized vision of the artist's world.

The Sculptor's Studio plates in the Vollard Suite represent Picasso's most sustained meditation on the relationship between the artist and his model, and between the artist and the classical tradition. The series was created during his relationship with Marie-Thérèse Walter, who served as the model for many of the female figures.
