Painted during Picasso’s 1909 return to Horta de Ebro, now Horta de Sant Joan, this landscape treats the town’s roofs, walls, and slopes as a tightly interlocked architecture of faceted planes. Ochres, greys, and muted greens replace descriptive local color, while the usual recession of a village view gives way to stacked volumes that seem to press toward the picture surface. The work makes place feel both observed and reconstructed: familiar buildings become a visual system in which mass, edge, and angle carry the image.

The Centre Picasso in Horta identifies the 1909 stay with Fernande Olivier as a decisive moment in Picasso’s early Cubist development. Its account emphasizes the flattening of physical masses, the use of geometric blocks, austere color, and the removal of anecdotal detail from nature. Horta also held deep personal meaning for Picasso after his formative 1898–99 stay there; by 1909 he returned to a landscape he knew in order to test a new language of form. This Horta series therefore helps explain the transition from observed landscape to the structural investigations of early Cubism.
