Student with a Pipe is one of the finest examples of Picasso's Synthetic Cubist collage technique, combining oil paint, charcoal, and pasted paper to create a figure of a student smoking a pipe. The work demonstrates the playful, inventive quality of Synthetic Cubism — the pipe is suggested by a simple curved line, the student's hat by a piece of pasted paper.
Painted in the winter of 1913–1914, Student with a Pipe belongs to the period when Picasso and Braque were developing the technique of collage — incorporating newspaper, wallpaper, and other materials into their paintings. The work was in MoMA's collection for many years before being deaccessioned.
