About This Work
This large bronze sculpture was assembled from found objects — a real baby carriage, a stove plate, and other domestic items — before being cast in bronze. The woman figure pushes the carriage with a characteristic maternal gesture, her body simplified to essential forms. The work is one of Picasso's most ambitious assemblage sculptures and a masterpiece of his Vallauris period.
Like the She-Goat and the Baboon and Young, this work was created in Vallauris from found objects and cast in bronze. The domestic subject — a woman with a baby carriage — reflects Picasso's engagement with everyday life and his ability to find sculptural possibilities in the most ordinary situations.
