About This Work

The Picasso Museum Barcelona describes this 1903 portrait of Picasso’s friend, patron, and fellow artist Sebastià Junyent i Sans as one of the accomplished Blue Period portraits. A saturated field of blue surrounds the large mass of the coat, while abbreviated black contours and small red accents in the face make the sitter’s gaze and features register with unusual immediacy.

The museum records the work as oil on canvas, 73.5 × 60 cm, inventory MPB 110.018, and a 1970 gift of Pablo Picasso. It explains that Junyent supported Picasso in Barcelona, including studio rent and purchases of early work, making him an important early collector. This direct record replaces an incorrect date, museum, dimensions, and image route in the former catalog entry.
