Three full-length figures are interlaced against a pale, theatrical ground; the museum highlights the charcoal contours, drapery, and alternating frontal and rear views as a modern reworking of an antique subject.
The museum places the painting in Picasso’s 1923 Antibes period, when he immersed himself in Hellenic references and drew on the classical motif at unprecedented scale. Its account relates the work to a broader body of 1920s bathers and to Picasso’s continuing reworking of antique, Mannerist, and contemporary visual sources. The painting is held by Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso and shown at Museo Picasso Málaga.
